Feeling like you roll over people? When delegating, or even just discussing daily tasking, you feel like you may be coming on too strong.
Or, perhaps you overcompensate by backing off too soon, leaving the impression you avoid opportunities to lead with strength.
Turn your TELL into ASK. Ask Powerful Questions!
Look at the difference:
TELL – That’s not time well-spent. Get back to work.
ASK – Can you tell me a little about your thought behind working on this right now?
TELL – This is done wrong. Please look at it again.
ASK – How can we make this look a notch better?
TELL – Here are your objectives for the project.
ASK – When can you spend a little time outlining some objectives for the project?
TELL – Don’t do that.
ASK – Hmm. Why are you doing that?
Obviously, you lose a little edge to your directness. Sometimes you may want to keep that. But if you tend to lean toward being too direct, you probably need some re-calibrating occasionally.
When you do something to SUCCESS, you probably do it to EXCESS. Try changing up your approach.
